    Air conditioning

No matter how well you maintain your air conditioning equipment, it can’t last forever. At some point, you’ll need to replace it with a new model to enjoy reliable service. How do you know when it’s time? It’s probably easier to detect problems than you realize.

Look for these common red flags when considering whether to repair or replace your HVAC systems:

    1. Your equipment is O-L-D. Quality manufacturers make systems capable of lasting 20 years or more, but how well do they run compared to newer models? In most circumstances, EnergyStar.gov recommends replacing cooling systems more than 10 years old for the sake of enjoying the new efficiency standards practiced by HVAC manufacturers.
    2. You keep calling the repair shop. Repairing worn components makes sense, but if you’re dealing with a stream of problems, chances are you’ll get better performance and value from buying new. The cost to purchase and install a brand new A/C can often be funded with specialty financing, depending on the shop you’re dealing with. You may also qualify for Glynn County community grants or other public programs, if you need help shouldering the cost. Your chosen repair shop should be able to connect you with the right resources.
    3. Your A/C has started to cycle on and off. Did you know most heating and air conditioning problems come down to electric problems? Shorted wires, tripped breakers, or blown fuses will most often be the cause of a service call, but when they aren’t, the issues can be complicated and expensive to work out. Take a quickly cycling system, for instance. Your A/C can turn on and off again for many reasons, but if the problem has just started, it could be a sign of serious leaks that are throwing off your refrigerant levels. A rapid cycling A/C could also be indicating that some parts have worn down and are beginning to fail. A qualified service technician will help you diagnose the cause for your A/C issues, and present quick solutions.
